Each fall, American ski resorts are inundated with young college graduates eager to make a final splash before heading off to the corporate world by working a variety of winter jobs – all to sustain more days skiing in one season than most skiers experience in a lifetime.

Could this be the right move for you? If yes, then you’re in luck because there are more ski resort jobs than applicants!

Most of the 485 ski resorts across the U.S. will depend on seasonal workers to staff their ski lifts, rental shops, restaurants, ski schools and other venues that cater to winter guests. A small percentage of these employees will return from last season but the majority of them are just starting out – just like you. Want to know how to get the best job?

Read on…

Start Early – Plan Ahead

The best way to begin looking into a winter job is by beginning the winter before. If you

happen to be skiing at the resort you’d like to work for, stop by the Human Resources department and ask for a job application. It’s also a good idea to chat with the department head in the specific department that interests you so that they can put a face to your name the next time you call. If you can’t afford to personally visit the resort, start inquiring about positions through email, letters and phone calls beginning in June or July.

If you know you want to pursue ski jobs, but you’re not quite sure which department to work for, a good approach to finding work is by attending one of the many resort-sponsored job fairs around the country. Most ski resorts host local job fairs for their community, so if you have the time and can afford a brief road trip, visiting a local job fair is the best way to meet the people who are in a position to hire people for winter jobs. Often times, applicants will get hired right on the spot! Larger resorts will also host job fairs in major metropolitan cities and even foreign countries, looking for winter employees.

Online Ski Resources

Resort websites are another great place to learn about ski resort jobs – both seasonal and year round. Typically categorized by department, applicants can read about the specific requirements of jobs, the rate of pay and even complete an on-line application. They will also be able to provide you with information about employee housing, health care and other important benefits before you make the plunge.

Many ski resorts even offer high-level, year round career opportunities in addition to seasonal positions. If you have specific skills in information technology, advertising, marketing or the law, you may find an exciting opportunity to mix a satisfying career with your passion for outdoor activity.

Enjoying Ski Resort Life

Want to know about housing? Night life? Benefits and perks? Through the magic of technology, job applicants can learn about the specifics of working at a ski resort by visiting company websites, bulletin boards and blog sites. Here, you’ll learn about the best places live, how to get around town and where to buy groceries. Most corporate websites also contain links to local

newspapers and Chambers of Commerce that provide new residents with everything they need to know about living in a resort community.

Who actually gets hired each winter has a lot to do with what skills and attributes you can bring to your employer. While specific experience can go a long way in landing that first resort job, it’s not a prerequisite. Most resort employers are looking for new faces to provide superior customer service for their guests, helping them to make the most out of their vacation experience – people who can follow directions and offer service with a smile.

Once you’ve returned your application and touched base with the Human Resources department, it’s always a good idea to find out who is in the best position to hire you in the department you’re interested in. Get their email or postal addresses and send them a brief, but well-written note about why you should be hired for the upcoming season.

Finally, before you accept the job of your dreams, be sure to browse the classified ads in the local newspapers to get an idea what it’s going to cost to live in a resort community. Living near a ski resort can mean a higher cost of living than you may be used to, so don’t let the prices of gasoline, rent and utilities catch you by surprise.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to pay income taxes on you wages? Well there is a job that does offer those advantages. You see for a few years I did enjoy the benefits of an income tax free job. Working for a timeshare resort where the property is located off shore from my residence offers tax free income. That doesn’t mean that if I live in the United States and I work in Europe that I won’t be paying income taxes. For several years I’ve worked for a resort in Dominican Republic which Income taxes where never withheld on my pay checks. The resort usually took care of the income tax issues since at that time you were imposed $1.00 per $1000 earned!

Always wanted to live in Hawaii, or Bali or anywhere in the world for that matter and thought what type of employment would allow me that kind of lifestyle. I can say with 20 plus years of experience that a timeshare career can offer you that way of life. But… there is always a but, there are some things you should be aware of.

There are many types of employment opportunities in the Timeshare (Vacation) industry. Whether your talented for sales, marketing, gifting, host/hostess, or management, you are sure to find your place. There are several opportunities in the industry that will hire and train applicants that have no experience in the industry.

One of the highest paid job in the industry is in sales. It’s not uncommon to see sales consultants making more that $100K a year plus benefits. Not bad for living somewhere most only dream about. A couple of questions should be asked before accepting any offers from a resort.

The first question to ask is “how many tours do they have every week?” And the second question is “do they have guaranteed financing?” These are very important questions that will make your experience with that company an enjoyable one or it could be the job from hell.

The first question deals with “tour flow”. Let me explain what I mean. A “tour” in the timeshare industry is a term to describe prospective buyers. An “on-site deal” meaning that sales presentations are conducted at the resort, you should be looking at 200-300 clients a week. You must keep in mind that if the sales line or sales team is in excess of 50, 300 clients will only result you getting 6 tours a week. For anyone to succeed in this industry you need at least 3-4 clients a day.

So here we are with a high tour flow and a small sales line, great you can smell the commissions just around the corner. That is all true unless you are missing another important element, financing.
Just imagine this. You have been grinding with your clients and after 2 or 3 hours your client finally says YES. Can you see that commission check in the amount of $1500.00 or more depending on how good you are at cutting a deal during the hiring process. Now imagine the resort has no guaranteed financing in place. Chances are you won’t see that check after all.

It’s very important to have guaranteed financing in place to secure your sales. Don’t forget that timeshare sales is an emotional sale and if you leave financing up to the client well he is most likely to “kick” or rescind on the deal. Once the client leaves the resort the excitement and information start to diminish. Remember the client leaves with a binder and a receipt for $18-$39K, so he’ll find a lot of reasons why he doesn’t need vacations anymore.

Any resort who doesn’t have sufficient tours or any financing in place would not be the place I would start off my new career. After 20 years in the industry, I’m still looking for my commission checks from the resorts that had no financing.

In my earlier blog I talk about how I had found a great beach job in the Caribbean. The resort was Villas Jasmin in Costambar, Dominican Republic. My job was to hand out V.I.P. invitations to tourists on the beach. This type of job is called OPC (Off Property Consultant) and you guessed it, for a timeshare resort.

Before I get in to the OPC work I want to talk to you about the misconception about timeshare. Timeshare is a resort that sells it’s inventory, meaning rooms to 52 different buyers. This means that you can purchase a room 1 week out of the year and stay at the resort every year for 1

week or as many as you purchase. Most resorts offer purchases for a period of time starting from 25 years to perpetual time. A lot of people have a fixed mindset that timeshare is a rip-off or a scam? My answer to that is “do you think Mickey mouse would rip you off?

Since I have spent over 20 years doing different jobs in different departments of a timeshare resort. Today we will take about the OPC job. Now this job can be done by anybody. Especially if you like the area in which you are at and want a very good paying job even if you are in a third world country. Remember, timeshare resorts pay just about the same as if you were in Dominican Republic or in Paris, France for that matter. You have to remember that most countries will not issue you a work permit if you are about to take a locals’ job. Which means that a lot of bar and restaurant jobs are out of the question. That’s why working at timeshare resorts is the way to go.

You don’t really need experience, unless you are mute then this job applies to everyone. When I started working as an OPC for Villas Jasmin I was paid $100 cash for every invitation that I handed out showed up at the resort. Now remember that was in the middle 80’s, so that was really a lot of money considering that you could have a full meal and a beer for around $1 US dollar! So for me to keep up my lifestyle I knew that if I brought in 3 tourists a week I would be flying. You have to remember at that time I was more interested in talking to the single female tourists. One of my friends Frank that I met from another resort that I eventually joined, was making not less that $1000US/Week. And on the other hand, his girlfriend never brought in less than $2300US/week!!If you think that’s impossible well you have to keep reading on. And for those of you reading this and have done this job, feel free to comment.

Before I let you go, I have a little story about my first clients that ever bought timeshare from me. At that time I was a consultant (other word for salesman) for Village Caribbe in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. It was in the season where all the tourists come to the islands on sailboats. You know that’s not the good season. Who wants to buy a room when you have a palace sitting in the marina? As that may be I though it was a great opportunity to increase my sales techniques without blowing any sales.

So this couple comes in on an invitation and to make a story short, I showed them the benefits and the resort. In the meanwhile the husband gets up to go to the washroom and his wife tells me that she is going to divorce her husband if she has to stay in that boat one more night! She also tells me that they can only afford $50,000 and they want 5 weeks. So the deal goes through and they leave. Boy all I could think about that night was my big fat commission and if my paycheck would come in 1 or 2 suitcases. Because at that time we were paid in cash and in Dominican Pesos. I think the rate at that time was 14 Pesos to 1US dollar.

Sometime a year later I was working for another resort on the same island different town and was waiting to buy an ice cream cone. This place is usually very busy and you have to wait in line. So while I was waiting, I saw a couple at the front of the line and thought to myself how familiar that couple was but couldn’t place them. Just when they were starting to walk towards me it came like a flash! These were the first clients that I sold timeshare to. What if the program didn’t work and they lost their $50K? So I did like most would do and turn my head a try to avoid them. Until I felt a tap on my shoulder, Hey Danny the client said. I said to myself damn he remembers my name! Well the women told me “thank you so much”! “What do you mean” I said. She said because of the timeshare I sold them, it saved their marriage! That was when I decided to make a career out of it.

16 years later while in Kona, Hawaii working for Mauna Loa Beach and Golf Resort guess who I see. My first customers again and yes they still remembered me. “Do you know how many weeks we own now”? 16 weeks and we are here to buy another one because my daughter is getting married and we have no time left. On my next blog I will talk to you about my promotion to travel consultant.

That’s it for now.

Every time someone asks me what I do for a living, I tell them that I have a resort job in Hawaii and their immediate reply is “how can I get a job like that?”

The job I’m talking about is a Resort Ambassador job at a top resort. How would you like to be able to choose your new job from 5500 resorts in 85 countries?

Today I can pick any location I want to discover by working at a resort in that area. Free housing and airfare provided as well as an executive income to boot!

You see it wasn’t always like that. Coming out of university I never had the opportunity to travel nor did I have the money to even think about it.

Luckily for me I found a want ad in our local newspaper. That ad went something like this… “work on the beaches of Dominican Republic (Caribbean), no experience needed”. Needless to say I was first at the interview, and 2 weeks later I was roasting myself on a beach in Costambar, DR.

google_ad_slot = "1300143280";
google_ad_width = 250;
google_ad_height = 250;
//-->

For over 20 years I’ve worked and traveled to places like, Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, Dominican Republic, USA, Asia, etc, without ever paying for airline tickets!

Today because of a family members’ illness I was forced to retire. Now I enjoy helping others achieve the same lifestyle I was blessed with for over 20 years.

I now run a site that lists Resort Jobs opportunities worldwide. If you enjoy skiing or snowboarding and would love to spend more time on the hills while earning good money, I have the resort job for you. Same goes for golfers, surfers, beach lovers, I have jobs for you too.

In my travels I’ve met doctors and lawyers who left their practices to work at golf resorts so they could spend more time on the golf course and making over $150K a year!

The easiest way to get a resort job that pays big bucks is to apply as a Resort Ambassador or OPC (Off Property Consultant). What’s great about being a Resort Ambassador is that your job consists of hanging on the beaches, bars, restaurants as well as anywhere tourists hang out, and hand out VIP invitations.

Let’s suppose you were on vacation at some exotic location and someone offer you $200 cash for 1.5 hours of your time to visit and have dinner at a new resort. Would you go? Sure you would. What if I told you that for you accepting the VIP invitation, I received $250 for inviting you! How many could you invite in a week?

Friends of mine working in Mexico and the Caribbean earns over $2-$3000 a week doing just that. And they all started with no experience. There are many departments within the resort that are always looking to fill positions.

Most of the top resorts in the world are hiring Resort Ambassadors (OPC)to promote their resort. Disney Vacations, Marriott’s, Sheraton’s, Hyatt’s just to name a few.

If you want to change you life and put a lot of adventure in it, this is the best job you will ever experience.

The Benefits Of Owning Vacation Ownership

In today’s economy it makes plenty of sense to own a timeshare. Have you checked out the prices of vacation homes lately? It’s just out of reach for today’s average families.

Most families really have 2 to 4 weeks vacations a year making the vacation home more of a burden the rest of the year. Let’s not forget that an average family will only use the vacation home only a percentage of the time while they bear 100% of the cost of purchase as well as 100% of the maintenance costs.

Another big disadvantage of owning your own vacation home is the fact that every year

you get to go to the same place year in year out.

Enter the world of vacation ownership or timeshare. Timeshare solves all the negative problems of owning a vacation home.

When you purchase a timeshare you only purchase the time that you really need. So let’s say you have 2 weeks vacations a year, then you would purchase 2 weeks of timeshare.

Remember about the vacation home being a burden the rest of the year when it’s not being used because of the costs involved in the up keep of your property? Well timeshare has solved that problem also. If you own 2 weeks of timeshare, then you’ll only pay for that portion in maintenance upkeep. That includes taxes, heating, insurance, lawn care and or snow removal as well a refurbishing the furniture and appliances every 5 to 7 years.

How about having to go to the same vacation home every year? Would that really be vacations?

Well timeshare has the answer for that problem also! How about having the option of choosing your next vacation from over 85 destination countries and over 5500 properties worldwide.

Red, White or Blue Week?

Did you know that owning a blue week sometimes has more advantages that a red week? Well it’s true.

What I am about to tell you is not something you will hear of at any Timeshare Resort. I should know, I spend over 20 years selling timeshares. You hear of people complaining that Timeshares are a ripoff or they simply don’t work. Those are the people who just don’t know how they work or bought at some undesirable location. If you had the choice in 2 locations for your vacations, which would you choose, Hawaii or Manitoba?

If you’re happy and comfortable in a $29 motel, then Timeshare might not be for you. I’m sure that if you are a family of 4, that a 2 bedroom condo with full kitchen and amenities would suit you better. What do you think that kind of accommodations cost per night? Not $29, more like $299++. In that case timeshare would not only save you money, but also allow you to stay at 4 and 5 star resorts worldwide.

I Personally own 2 timeshare weeks at different resorts. Because I have a flexible schedule, I purchased blue weeks. I know, nobody at the resort offered you blue weeks. You see blue weeks are at the bottom of the resort inventory, thus much cheaper.

So here is the simple trick I advise my friends looking to buy a Timeshare week. Listen up.
“Buy a blue week of the smallest unit available”. In other words if the resort is selling 3,2,1 bedrooms or studios, then studios would be the smallest unit. Now if you were a family of 4 and you could be available to take your vacation on short notice (42 days) then your choice should be a blue week in a 2 bedroom unit.

If a red week at a particular resort are selling at $20,000 per week, then a blue week would be selling around $3-$5K.

The other advantage is exchanges. When I use RCI, I use Flex-change. Under the Flex-change terms, you can take what is available regardless of the time (blue week) or the size of the unit you own.

Most of the time that I request a Flex-change I usually end up with a 2 or 3 bedroom unit. I basically use my weeks for skiing and island vacations. I must say that I am more than satisfied with all the exchanges up to date. It sure helps have 20+ years in the industry.

Given The Choice Take The Exit Program.

The vacation ownership industry offers many lucrative employment opportunities if you know where to look or know someone already in the business.

There are always positions available for good sales consultants, TO’s (closers), as well as managers. If sales is not your cup of tea, then the marketing department is always on the lookout for phone reps, promotional agents or OPC’s (off property contacts).

Now if you’re like me and sales is no stranger to you then may I recommend Exit sales

consultant. Sure your commission is less than a TO’s but then again the Exit program usually sells for about 80% less than the TO’s full program!

A huge advantage you have as an exit consultant is that you get to talk to more tours (clients) than the TO ever will. When a TO sits at a table to do his “closing magic”, he might not leave the table for an hour or more.

“My answer is no, I’m not buying today” says the tour to the TO. That’s when the TO calls the exit department to come to bat as exit consultants. It’s now our job to help the tour with a program that costs much less, has a shorter term, and could be upgraded if they chose to. How sweet is that I ask you. The tour usually thinks that too and signs up.

On a timeshare sales track you have the “front end” where the consultant shows all aspects of owning a week of timeshare, the unit, how you can use it, as well as the exchange ability value. Then there is the “back end” where the consultants turns over the table to you guess it the TO (turn over). If no sale comes of it, it is then turned to the Exit department.

As an exit consultant there are three questions I’ll ask the tour to see if there is any interest what so ever.

“Folks. Aside from the money, do you like the product?”

“Would you use the product?”

“Would you use it mainly at the host resort or resorts around the world?”

In 95% of cases if the answer is yes to just one of the three questions, I know we have a new owner/member.

Now that took at most 3 minutes! Next!

So the next time you’re looking for a job where you don’t have to attend any of the meetings, a 4 minute pitch, higher commission rates, then apply for the exit consultants position.

When The End Is Near You Will Be Offered An Exit Program.

During any vacation ownership (Timeshare) sales presentation whereas a closer is unsuccessful at closing a full sale, an Exit or Trial Program is then offered.

Exit or Trial programs in the vacation ownership industry come in different forms. Some programs offer a number of weeks to be used for a fee. That fee is over and above the initial Exit program purchase price.

<script type="text/javascript"

The purchase price for an Exit program will range from $495 to $5000 and sometimes more. Whereas the use of a week will range between $250 and $800 per week and that’s not high times (X-Mas, March break, etc.).

The reasons why such a program is offered by a resort or travel club are quite simple. The 2 main reasons are turning a non purchaser into a committed semi owner and the other reason is it offsets the marketing cost of the tours (prospective buyers).

The Exit program I use at the resort where I am the director of that department is quite the deal. Relax, I’m just trying to explain what makes a good Exit program and which ones to avoid.

When a tour comes to our timeshare sales presentation, they are offered a fixed week at our resort which is in a high demand ski resort area, for a period of 60 years. The purchase price for that week is $24,990 with annual maintenance fees of $495 for a one bedroom condo.

When the tour decides not to buy either because of the money or finds 60 years longer than he needs, I will then show the Exit program. In this case the Exit program is exactly the same program as above. The only difference being time and money.

Our resort’s Exit program offers ownership at the resort for a period of 10 years compared to 60 years and all for the purchase price of $3700 compared to $24,000. What the Exit program does for the purchaser is it allows them the option to upgrade to the full 60 year program within the 10 year time frame by paying the difference.

My advise to you when offered an Exit or Trial program and the deal seems sweet, ask questions!

1) Can I use the program here? (At the host resort)

2) Do I call the host resort to make booking arrangements. If the answer is no, then their Exit program most likely comes from a third party source. Beware of third party programs. They could go out of business and the host resort doesn’t have to take any responsibility in fulfilling the terms of your purchase.

Investigate before purchasing an Vacation Ownership Exit or Trial program! Too many times in my 23 years of working in the vacation ownership industry, I met someone who lost hard earned money in a shady Exit or Trial program. Make sure you don’t become the next one.
